Amazon withdraws from China

The largest e-commerce company in the world has announced that they are pulling out of China - or at least a small part of it.

Amazon will not withdraw completely from China. The company has announced on the Chinese platform WeChat that they will no longer sell their Kindle e-readers as of today.

Likewise, the online store will no longer sell books after June 30, 2023. However, customers can download one year, after they bought the e-book. From 2024, the Kindle app will be removed from Chinese app stores.

Amazon will continue to invest in other areas in China, such as cloud services, advertising and e-commerce. However, Amazon said the withdrawal of Kindle was not due to pressure from the Chinese government or censorship.
