Russia Demands Foreign Hosting Providers to Establish Local Presence - Amazon Web Services Affected

  • Roskomnadzor, the Russian regulator, has expanded its list of foreign hosting providers that are subject to "landing obligations." This includes major companies such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), which will now be required to establish a local presence in Russia and comply with new regulations.

  • The inclusion of Amazon Web Services on the list has raised concerns about the impact on the company's operations and its ability to provide cloud services in Russia. AWS has a significant customer base in the country and plays a crucial role in the region's cloud infrastructure. The implementation of the new requirements will require AWS to navigate the regulatory landscape and ensure compliance while maintaining its service quality for customers.

The Russian regulator, Roskomnadzor, has released a list of 12 foreign hosting providers that are required to establish a local presence in Russia under Federal Law No. 236-FZ "On the Activities of Foreign Entities in the Internet on the Territory of the Russian Federation." One of the affected providers is Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world's leading cloud computing service providers.

The new regulatory requirements aim to hold foreign hosting providers, whose users are located in Russia, more accountable and ensure better control over their activities. The affected companies, including Amazon Web Services, must now establish a presence in Russia, set up a feedback form for Russian users on their website, and register with Roskomnadzor to facilitate cooperation with the authorities.

Amazon Web Services is particularly in the spotlight as the company has a significant customer base in Russia and plays a central role in providing cloud infrastructure to businesses and organizations in the region.

The implementation of the new requirements, such as establishing a local presence in Russia and fulfilling administrative obligations, will have an impact on AWS's business operations.

Roskomnadzor's decision to include foreign hosting providers like Amazon Web Services on the list of "landing obligation" companies comes amidst a more stringent regulatory environment in Russia. This move is seen as an attempt by the Russian government to exert greater control over data flow and online activities in the country.

Representatives from Amazon Web Services have been requested to provide a statement, clarifying their response to this regulation and their plans to comply with the new requirements. However, the exact impact on AWS's business operations and customer relationships is yet to be determined.

The regulation of foreign hosting providers in Russia poses a challenge and raises questions about implementation and potential implications for the industry.
