TSMC plans to build a new fab in Japan in the second half of the decade, which will cost 1 trillion yen ($7.5 billion) to build. This fab will then manufacture 5 and 10 nanometer semiconductors. So far, only 12 and 16 nanometer semiconductors have been made in Japan by the company.

The Japanese government is providing a 476 billion yen subsidy, about half the cost of building the fab. The Japanese government wants to use advanced semiconductors to boost the economy, which has been stagnating for several years. Sony will also participate in the construction of the factory, the amount is unclear.
